    Unsteady Idle

I just installed a cone filter in replacement of the air box, and on a cold start WITHOUT the MAF, i get unsteady idle readings under 1000 rpm. When the MAF is plugged in, the car will not maintain an idle and will start to cut out until you unplug the MAF. Anyone know why this is happening?
Also, my car is running better now with the setup of: cone filter and no MAF, then when it was running a stock setup.

I am still not understanding this mod.... a plastic bag over the intake, how does the engine breathe? My only logical comparison would be put a bag over your head and zip tie around your neck, yeah water isnt getting into your lungs but either is oxegen. Anyone else not really understanding the plastic bag thing or is it just me.....

    plastic bag over intake.....:wtfsmilie:

Slow. lol. The engine at idle just wasn't as smooth and it wasnt as powerful and the when it was stock it idled around 750, now when the idle steadies out, it idles at 1000.

I mean, I'm not trying to come across as a prick here but do you really think a filter made that much of a difference? A difference in idle, maybe. The power, ehhh I have a hard time with that one. Either way, check the piping or vacuum lines for leaks or anything. No matter what, your car should not run better with the MAF unplugged. That just doesn't make any sense. I know my car is turbocharged, but if I unplug that Mofo, I black smoke like a turbo diesel not to mention it idles like shat and loses all sense of power. It's came unplugged before in case your wondering.

Yeah, possibly. Idk. I filled up this morning and my normal MPG is about 23 MPG so this weekend when i fill up i guess ill know how it effected efficiency. Before I installed the filter I'm almost positive I was running rich because i was getting a lot of carbon on my bumper.

Are you sure that your MAF is still good?

Crazy. I would check for vacuum leaks and would try a different MAF.

Have not tried a new MAF, and what is the best method to check for vacuum leaks? because I checked the hoses and I had Firestone check the hoses and didn't find anything. This was maybe 3 weeks ago.

An easy method is to spray brake cleaner around vacuum hoses and injectors and where the intake manifold meets the cyl head. If the idle suddenly changes you will know you have leak there.
